Using salt for medication or for the tank ? Salt added to the tank should be done 1 teaspoon for every 5 gallons but i do 1 teaspoon every 10gallons. Salt for medication is 2 teaspoons to every 10 gallons and raise the temp to about 84 degreees. As far as the rules on what type of salt to use. I know people that use table salt with no ill effects. i don't use table salt. I use regular aquarium salt. I put it in a jar with some aquarium water and shake it up until it is all desolved. I put in the proper amount per ten gallons of water. Then if i remove 10 gallons of water for a waer change I add 1 teaspoon back in the same way.
