I have never heard of such a disease are you sure its not just "poop"? If you send me a picture of your cichlid to: mike@cichlidparadise.com I maybe able to identify it and post it here so we can get more information from other members. Thanks for posting and I hope we can solve your problem.Mike Admin

This could be an intestinal sickness or maybe even anchor worms.
Please anyone if you recognized this problem please post or send us a PM ASAP any info would be greatly appreciated.

Could it be a severe injury that now has a bad case of fungus? I am thinking maybe the intestines are now exposed to the outside? It looks a bit large to be parasites, but i dont have alot of experience in that area. Also if its over the vent area could the ovipostitor have prolapsed? Was it breeding lately? I have chickens and that happens, its rare but does happen, what about fish? I would net the fish and try to examine it better to see if it is organs now exposed and infected or if it is a severe fungal infection to a wound.Check to see if it is something on the surface or if it extends into the body cavity. Also could it be a tumor? I would have guessed you would have noticed the tumor before. I would guess if it has been hiding for a couple weeks it has had it for awhile, probably a injury or something. I think you could scrape them off if its fungus and then treat with melafix or primafix? confirm those meds with mike or others first incase there is a better or more appropriate one.

HEY....the pictures that i took of my cichlid is him in a zip lock bag with holes in it at the top of the tank....and during the process of catching him...a lot of the "balls" fell off or got scraped off.....i left him in there for about 3 days....and it slowly started lookin alot better.....i didnt feed him either......none of the other fish i have in my tank has anything like this or show any signs of diseases...and i do have a healthy tank....so i finally released him and he seems to be acting normal (just very hungry on the first feeding)...is there a place on this site where i can post other pictures of my tank for people to see?...i would like for other people to see what i have put a lot of time and effort into.

I'm glad your fish is doing better. It seems to me that your cichlid may have had a internal bactrial infection of some kind. Just keep a close eye on him to see any further problems with this situation.
You may send me any picture to the same email and I will post it where you would like it. You should however register for this forum so you can enter your tank or cichlids in our monthly contests displayed on our homepage every month. If there is anything else I can help you with just feel free to email me or post it here thanks.

I have been trying to get the ich off of my one cichlid for about three days. I have been using Quick Cure and it is my first time running into this issue. He is the biggest ciochlid i own and the only one that seems to of cougt them however a few days ago i lost an ob that i had just purcheased a few weeks earlier. I alos noticed that my catfish has what appears to have cotton in his I and I'm sure that this is a bungle or bacteria that he should be able to fix on his own and maybe a little melifix could help. my questiion is I have been using this quick cure now for four days and doing 50% water changes as well and moved the temp up to about 80F and am scared to go any higher do to the new fish that i bought about a week ago and they ar juviniles and dont want them to die. anyone out think of anything i can do on top of what i am please let me know. thanks

Clumic I would Raise the temp a little more. Then add aquarium salt. That out all carbon from your filter system. Then use something other than quick cure. I use Jungle Fungus Guard and it always works for me. Unless the fish is to far gone. which if left untreated will only take a day or two. Do water changes like the directions tell you. Then in 3 days you should see a big diffwrence. Also do not feed. most times the foood will just lay on the bottom and turn the water bad.
Lindsey, i have seen this on a fish before. I didn't know what it was but after a few days it was gone. I treated as a bacterial infection and it seemed to work. even if it looks better i would still treat. I am leaning more towards something that it ate. Old food and such.
