My name is chris and am keeping various malawi's and one peacock for some activity.
Our tank is a jewel 400 with a custom built hood via the neighbour as the tank was previously a marine tank by the previous owner, we intend to build another tank when we get a cheap enough price for 10mm glass.
Hope to be able to help others and us be helped with any problem we may have too.

Hello Jim and welcome to our little corner on the web. To send pictures either upload them to photobucket or send them to me at mike@cichlidparadise.com and I'll upload them to our server and post them in your threads for you. Thanks for posting and I look forward to seeing your Cichlids take care.

Hows it going everyone. I go by the name Polo. I have been into cichlids for 7 years now. I currently have a 75 gallon aquarium set up that might be over stocked. I have 40 cichlids in there from 1-8 inches. Here’s the run down of the cichlids I have.
4 Champsochromis caeruleus (5-8 inches) 3 Iodotropheus sprengerae (3 inches) 5 Labidochromis caeruleus (1-2 inches) 8 Melanochromis interruptus (2-5 inches) 4 Pseudotropheus socolofi (2-3 inches) 8 Pseudotropheus zebra (2-5 inches) 3 Labeotropheus fuelleborni (2-4 inches) 1 Mloto White Blaze (4 inches) 3 Plecos
I have a few additional aquariums which are smaller that I'm going to set up soon to put some cichlids in there. Additional info about myself....I'm 24 years old, recently graduated with a Masters in Business Adminstration. I enjoy video games, comic books, and drinking beers. Anyone want to talk to me online about cichlids my screen name is Kid Polo 5.

Hey polo!
I bet that tank is very colorful and active. One of the things a overcrowded tank does is cuts down on aggression. The Champsochromis caeruleus are a predatory fish. I would bet they are the king of your tank. This combo is quite unique but as long as it is working for you thats all the matters.

Polo and shooter, I was gonna touch on the benefits of over crowding but figured 40 might be overcrowding for a tank that size even if it is set up for overcrowding as a way to manage the aggression. 40 juvies in a tank that size is one thing, 40 adult full size fish might be something else !

I just figured it using the max size. It omes out to 2.2 inches per gallon. I am sure these are not all the biggest number listed. If you have the exact number of the fish store recommended. you would have 75 inches of fish. I no not agree with this. Every tank has a purpose. some are way understocked and very aggressive while tanks that are way overstocked are sometimes fine. Filtration is that key. I am not saying that all fish will be there happiest, but then again we have taken them from there natural environment! I saw a tank not to long ago that was 125 gallons with a 40 gallon sump. The guy had close to 200 fish in it. He didnt have any trouble with aggression. I dont understard why it works but LIKE I SAID if it works for you then it should fine! Personally I try to give adult fish 3-6 gallons of water. I have had grow tanks with 100 babies at 1" in a 20 gallon tank. I filter this particular tank for 200+ gallons. I also do a 50% water change every day on all my baby tanks that are Malawi. Each person have there own way of doing things. I have one tank that has a undergravel filtration system. People tell me they wouldn't use them because you will have a nitrate crash sometime. I just tell them they must not know how to use them! I have had mine up and running for 13 years and only taken the plates up once. Part of the problem is that people only understand what people have told them and dont do the research for themselves. I dont expect you or anyone to have all the answers but most anything can be done if you think it through, do your research, and sometimes its just trial and error.
